“When I am fighting I am keeping my mind empty from any expectations. I am waiting for something unique, completely new.”
Rickson Gracie – 8th Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt
Rickson is of one of many, many great athletes that describe a heightened state of consciousness when speaking about their sport. I described flow at length in an earlier post. But no one can do it better than Mihaly Csikszentmihaliy, the father of positive psychology himself. Here he is asking, “What makes a life worth living?” and finds the answer amongst those who find pleasure and lasting satisfaction in activities that bring about a state of “flow”.
On of my favorite parts of the talk is this chart; it just summarizes life so well.
Please share which activities are challenging, yet you still possess enough skills in the activity to enter the state of flow. For me it’s wrestling and brazilian jiu-jitsu.
