“AND THE NEW …”
After announcing last week that pro boxer Chris Algieri joined the Flow Athletics Advisory Board, I’m even more excited to announce Chris’s newest title: WBO Junior Welterweight Champion of the World.
This was no walk in the park for the undefeated fighter (20-0 boxing, 20-0 kickboxing) squaring off against the Siberian Rocky, Ruslan Provodnikov. After taking Ruslan’s hardest punch, Chris had to claw his way back from a 10-7 first round. Thankfully Algieri was able to show that heart, mental fortitude and technique wins championships.
The judges awarded the belt via split decision by scores of 114-112, 114-112 and 109-117, in front of an announced crowd of 6,218.
Provodnikov vs. Algieri: HBO Boxing After Dark Highlights
“It was a great fight,” Algieri said afterwards. “The shots in the first round were the most powerful but they were few and far between … I was able to anticipate his left hook throughout the fight. I showed the boxing world who Chris Algieri is.”
Chris credits his amazing comeback to boxing smartly and sticking to his game plan. Score one more for having a strong mental game.
My favorite post-fight quote:
“The boxer with the impressive educational background and good looks won a controversial split decision against the fighter who used to sniff glue as a youngster and continues to snack on raw moose liver.” – NY Daily News
It’s my hope that Chris Algieri’s win will inspire a whole new generation of boxers and athletes to focus on their mental game!
